Why Do Eyelash Extensions Fall Out?
Eyelash extensions add dramatic length and volume to your natural lashes, but how long do they last? While lash extensions can last anywhere from two to four weeks, some fall out sooner than others, and it’s important to understand why this happens so you can make informed decisions about the length of time you choose to wear them.
When you first get your lash extensions
The reason why your eyelashes may be falling out isn’t necessarily because you have bad extensions or a poorly trained technician—it can actually have to do with your own natural eyelashes. You may have some pre-existing condition that is causing damage to your lashes, such as alopecia areata or trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder). Try taking an over-the-counter supplement like Biotin which can strengthen and lengthen your eyelashes or you can try our Lash Enhancing Serum to promote more lash growth!
If these conditions don’t apply to you, then it could just be something temporary that will resolve itself within a few weeks. In that case, your lashes are likely falling out due to rapid growth. Your eyelashes usually don’t grow at a uniform rate—some get longer quicker than others, for example. As they get longer and begin to rub against one another (and/or other things), they tend to fall out more often than usual until they reach their regular length and growth cycle slows down again.
Why do eyelashes fall out?
Eyelashes have their own growth cycle. It's natural to lose anywhere from 2 to 5 lashes per day, so don't worry if you notice a few lash fans here and there! This is completely normal since the extensions are falling out with your natural lashes. That being said, you'll lose anywhere from 28 to 50 fans before your two week fill with your lash artist! However, if you notice you're losing a lot more than that per day, then there is definitely a problem.
If your extensions are falling out, ask yourself these questions:
- Am I washing my extensions thoroughly every day with a lash extension approved shampoo?
- Do I wear a lot of makeup?
- Do I use a lot of skincare?
- Do I sleep on my face?
Retention issues can happen to anyone, so don't worry! Discuss some solutions with your lash artist on your next visit; these can be quick fixes!
Tips for maintaining your eyelash extensions
If you’re worried about how long your extensions will last, take good care of them! Here are a few tips for making sure your extensions stay on as long as possible:
- Wash your hands before touching your eyelashes to avoid excess oils or a possible infection.
- Be gentle while cleansing!
- Sleep with a silk pillowcase and try not to sleep on your face.
- Avoid rubbing or picking your lash extensions.
The most important part of a lash extension is keeping your natural lashes healthy, so that the extensions can last as long as possible. The best way to do that is by taking good care of your eyes and your lashes. If you get makeup or skincare on them, wipe away any excess before going to bed so they won’t fall out with your lashes at night. As always, watch for any signs of infection in and around your eyes and report them immediately to a medical professional if you notice anything unusual.
